The morning usually consists of my husband sending me links on all the gadget blogs he reads, that I usually don’t have time, or brainpower to sort through.
This morning, it was a link from Engadget. About Penguin’s iPad books. I took a look at the video and I was amazed at all the capabilities. I know I would love to interact with my books the way they are showing off the iPad’s ability.
But the thing that got me going more than anything, was the children’s book they showcased. It was the first glimpse into how this technology could work for my son.
The surface is large enough that his unorganized movements can still activate the pages. Whereas, in the iPod Touch, he has to be very specific at where he is touching to make the apps work. Although he doesn’t have the coordination to hold a book, he could have an iPad in front of his wheelchair, just within reach to play, and learn!
The movement specific books and apps will be great for us to work on his fine motor skills. And the screen is large enough for him to see what he’s doing. It may even help us work on his visual acuity. I can, for the first time, envision how we will be able to teach my son with this. He will be able to do schoolwork, although it will be adapted to what typical children his age are doing, he will still be able to learn the same things they are!
The sky is the limit with this new device! Now, the only question is, who will be the first one in this house to get one?
My bet is on the littlest hero.
